" Diabetic Diet Plan "
No Way!
As a diabetes educator I truly hate the words “ Diabetic Diet Plan ”. It gives the idea that there is one way to eat to control diabetes and that this “way of eating” is just for diabetes. This of course is wrong. (And thank goodness! I say this selfishly since I have diabetes too.) What is hard for many people with and without diabetes to understand is that there are numerous different food concepts that can be used in an infinite number of combinations to help people manage their health and diabetes. Many of these strategies are the same as those used by people without diabetes. Let me be clearer - people with diabetes are free to eat any foods. Us dietitian's are eager to use the saying “All foods can fit”. Yes, that includes real chocolate. You have the choice to choose “yes” or “no” to having it as does any person without diabetes. You also have the choice to use methods other than food to control blood sugars. No, this is not a cop out. It is reality. But alas, that is another topic. Let me get back on track.
Ahhh, food. There is so very, very much that can be said about food and diabetes. Rather than attack it all like a long book, I'll post relevant pages as they are written here. Overall, I tend to separate food topics (“ diabetic diet plan “ strategies if you will) into a few major headings:
Glycemic Index Articles
Healthy Eating For Diabetes
Healthy Portions
Carbohydrate Counting
Other Diabetes and Diet Related Topics
Weight Loss
Diabetic Supplements
I'm not big on supplements.
Frankly there isn't enough “good” quality research out
there to make me confident about highly recommending any specific
one supplement for diabetes. Supplements are not what make a healthy
“diabetic diet plan”. Healthy food choices mixed
carefully with some knowledge of food, diabetes meds and most
specifically of your own diabetes is what is needed for most people.
Although frankly, some folks eat whatever without full knowledge and
just luck out with great blood glucose levels.( I hate them. They
have Cadillac pancreases. My pancreas bit the dust years ago.)
I will caution you that you may
not benefit from products that market themselves as suitable
supplements for a “ diabetic diet plan “. On the other
hand, you might. Be careful. Check with your pharmacist. Not
everything “natural” is safe. At some point, I will add
in articles here and there.
Unfortunately there may be
excellent and safe supplements out there but there won't likely be
enough “good quality” research with large study groups
followed for long periods of time and excellent methodology to
support it. Why? Because pharmaceutical companies can't patent much
of the natural stuff out there so they don't invest the money in
it's research. Bugger.
